Poem #25: Cool Coloured Chequered Challenge (4Cs that I didn't foresee)

This poem expresses, albeit in lighter vein, my feelings while sketching the portrait of my mentor Sri Sheshadri Mokshagundam. The portrait and this poem are my gifts to him for his 70th Birthday.

Uffh….whatta challenging reference pic it was Sir…for sketching your portrait!
I had to dig deep into myself, to find
Do I really have those traits to sketch this portrait?
Sri Sheshadri Mokshagundam
Right from the top….
What with those weeny tiny streaks of hair
Stranding around in the air
To get them non- straight yet look right
I had to break my head to use that arty might

How I wish that “Young at 70, spirits aplenty” you
Had a face rid of wrinkles like a boy of twenty
Surely shrunk would have been, all my struggles
What challenged me most amidst this colouring wriggle
To get that mystical twinkle
Was to penetrate beneath your goldie specs
And into the eyes to sketch those two tiny specks

Wonder why you had to stray away
From your standard simple shirt style…Y Sir Y?  (For me to sketch, it felt like falling of the sky!)
Why slip into a cool blue one hued with sorts
Of purple, pink and red
That too so complexly checkered (which made me dread)
Only to check my sketch
And sign it off saying….
“Oh so Cool and sooo well Coloured, but why all Chequered” ??           LoL !!

Team Nostalgia at Dignity Foundation Bengaluru - Aug 18 2017: Episode #65

It was freedom at its fullest for Team Nostalgia in their 65th Episode at Dignity Foundation, Bengaluru. Granting this freedom to himself and his team was our adorable anchor Sri Sheshadri Mokshagundam who let the panelists pick their own numbers to entertain the Senior Citizens.
Smt. Sudha chose to celebrate Krishna Janmashtami by devoting most of her playlist to Lord Krishna and a couple of patriotic songs celebrating the 70th I-Day of Mother India.  A wholly hearty rendering of “Ae Mere Watan ke Logon” earned her the title “Lata Didi of Team Nostalgia”!
Prakash Sir, having missed Roshanlal Nagrath’s episode last time decided to make up for it with most of his playlist rung round Roshan. Back from a sabbatical (of export quality J ) his rendering especially of “Ab Kya Misaal Doon Tumhara” from 1962 film “Aarti” was pepped with verve and vigour.
Smt. Rekha as always in the best of moods, this time though chose the romantic mode to transport herself and the audience to a new high! Armed with a playlist packed with poetry from private album of Gulzar fame, to celebrate his birthday that day, she kept us roaring with ragas, along with her singing away sensuous numbers.  Picked from her playlist for my song review was “Surmayi Akhiyon Mein…” from the film “Sadma” picturized on Sridevi and Kamal Hasan. Review can be read right at the top of this post.
Sheshadri Sir inaugurated the episode by patriotically picking “Insaaf ki Dagar Pe” from the film Gunga Jumna, sole number that he so soulfully sang that stilled the audience to silence. For every song, the Anchor in him always has titbit stories to share in his own witty way. However when he went quizzical with “Ek Radha Ek Meera” - a song from Ram Teri Ganga Maili, a senior citizen from the audience rattled off in a jiffy an array of answers well before questions were queued up stunning Shesh Sir back to silence! May I call this bit a tat for Shesh Sir’s titbit lovingly offered by Smt. Rekha Kini – DF’s Evergreen Encyclopedia, purely paving the WAY TO GO for Team Nostalgia!!

Team Nostalgia at Dignity Foundation, Bengaluru - Episode #66

What a sea of songs of Salil’s that Team Nostalgia sailed us through in its 66th Episode at Dignity Foundation, Bengaluru this month! Armed with a meticulously planned playlist themed on music composer Salil Chowdhary that spoke…nay sang volumes of the versatility of the composer, Anchor Sri Sheshadri Mokshagundam was all of verve and vigour.

Opening the programme with ”Naa Jiya Lage Naa” of “Anand” fame, sung by Rekha, audience couldn’t have asked for a more perfect beginning to Salil’s repertoire of songs. A complex number such as “Mila Hai Kisi Ka Jhumka” from film “Parakh” rendered effortlessly by Sudha as also that wonder song ‘Saathi Re Tujh Bin Jiya” from the horror film “Poonam ki Raat” stilled the audience to haunting silence! Only to be woken up with a peppy folky one like “Dhitang Dhitang Boli…” - lovely rendering by Rekha followed by yet another one “Aha Rhimjhim ki yeh Pyare Pyare …” a duet by Rekha and Shesh Sir tempting us to tilt our necks! Doing complete justice to some fab songs like “Kahi Door Jab Din Dhal Jaaye…” and “Suhana Safar Aur Ye Mausam Haseen…” was Prakash Sir. “Kahi Door…” was yet another one rendered by Prakash Sir picked from the film “Anand”  where, as Shesh Sir says, “A movie made for Raj Kapoor;  perfect poignant portrayal of every role; philosophy spoken on celluloid subtly conveying ways of welcoming the inevitable phase in every human’s life  i.e., Exit from this world.

Baagh me kali khili…” as well as “Dhitang Dhitang Boli…” rendered so beautifully in Bengali by Rekha. Why would she miss singing these when it’s heard through microphone at macro decibels in every pandal of the streets of Bengal. Thanks to yes S Chowdhary  Saab, Bengaluru beti now I know why you are so much a Bengali Saheli.

Shesh Sir signed off in style preserving “Rajni Gandha…” title song till the end generously showering on us the Gandha (fragrance) of Salil straight from his “Dill’ (heart). Signed off…did he?
Not really for Smt. Girijamma, a cheerful lady among the audience of “Naa Ninna Marayalaare Sheshadri” fame! filing her “farmaaish” for the team to sing “Dooradinda bandantha sundaranga jaana” from the Kannada film “Samshaya Phala”.  When rest of the audience second her first request, would the team refuse more so when “Sundaranga Jaana” is anchoring? Samshayave Illa !! (No doubt, absolutely !)

Team Nostalgia at Good Earth, Palmgrove, Bengaluru on Nov 19, 2016. and Episode #67 at Dignity Foundation, Bengaluru

Theatrical ambience - Amphi like - tempting many to click a quick selfie…. Bright lights dotting verdant green walled enclosure, interspersed by interesting interplay of solids n voids of concrete n metal; Coleus, here n there clinging on to rugged stone plinth that based the stage; Enthusiastic community crowd filling the steps right up to top; Trees that flanked on either side of the stage with boughs calendula kind, cantilevered from their trunks, kind enough to bow over their One Sis n Many Bros sitting on stage, a Good Earthy feel…what an inspiration to pen my review of one of a score of songs sung by Team Nostalgia.
