Here is a tale of an exceptional song that sings about an
unheard of and unseen strange tale, which neither he (Raaj Kumar) nor she (Meena
Kumari) could tell, for neither knew where it began and where it ended!
The scene is a wedding reception held by Malhotra hospital
staff, Shimla for Dr. Sushil Verma (Raaj Kumar) on his wedding to Kusum
(Nadira) daughter of his benefactor and his father’s friend who paid for his education.
Meena Kumari as Karuna, a nurse at his
clinic, when asked to sing a song, rises up to the occasion and sings her heart
out.
Karuna, though devastated by Sushil’s marriage to Kusum,
maintains her stately dignity and resolve to distance herself from Sushil, a
trait of hers which gets tested often. This song is one such occasion where she
outperforms in the test! Sitting on a boat (yeah, it’s a boating party!), clad
in a striking white sari that is perfectly in sync with her persona –
simplicity, purity, peace n ha, nurse!

setting (thanks to brilliant B&W photography by Joseph Wirsching) is Meena
Kumari whose tear-edged eyes glisten despite the gloom within, that’s so brilliantly
hidden, the passionate adorable glances between her and beau notwithstanding!
An awesome track with blissful melody that signifies the
storm within paralleled by a brilliant portrayal of calm demeanour on the exterior.
Shankar Jaikishan won the Filmfare Best Music Director Award
for this film.
Edwina (as Nurse Rosie in this film) got married to Keith
the same year this film was released. She had a few dialogue deliveries and
song appearances in this film.
